GCSE Results Day 2017/18

GCSE Results 2017/18

GCSE success for St Margaret’s CE Academy

Following on from the strong post-16 results it has been the turn of the Year 11s to receive their GCSE results.

Overall, 78% of pupils achieved passes in both English and Maths at grade 4 or better (a ‘standard pass’ in the new 9-to-1 grading system), and 55% achieved ‘strong passes’ in both subjects (i.e. a grade 5 or better). These figures are significantly higher than last year’s national averages: the comparative figures nationally in 2017 were 63% and 42%.

The results were all the more impressive because of the extensive changes that have been made to most GCSE specifications this year.

We are pleased to see students obtaining the new top level of grade 9, with one such student obtaining three 9s in Biology, Chemistry and Physics and staying on at SMA’s Sixth Form to continue to his passion for science.

Principal Stephen Brierley, commented: “This set of results is a fantastic achievement by all concerned. I am thrilled that our Year 11 students have matched their Year 13 colleagues in achieving such excellent results. Congratulations to all our pupils, and many thanks too to all the teachers and support staff who have helped make these results possible.

“It’s certainly been a challenge for schools to adapt to these new GCSEs, with so many other changes being implemented at the same time – and with the constant pressures of limited funding too. I’m delighted with the way our staff and students have risen to the challenge – they can all be truly proud of themselves today!”

Stephen also expected that the great results will encourage more students to apply for places in the Sixth Form. “We still have places in next year’s Year 12, and applicants don’t need to go to church to join us. If any prospective students are interested in becoming part of our highly successful Sixth Form, do get in touch.
