John Naylor (Headmaster 1965-81)

We are sad to announce the death of John Naylor the sixth headmaster of St Margaret's who died in hospital in Derby on the 15th January. He was appointed headmaster in 1965 from Barnard Castle Grammar School where he served as Deputy Head. He was the first headmaster for 70 years who did not have a previous association with the school and he came with new ideas and a fresh approach.

He successfully pioneered a place for the school in the changing educational set up in the city. He promoted the school's Christian values, encouraged sport and developed the sixth form. Under his leadership the school enjoyed great academic success. On his retirement in 1981 the school's strong reputation in the city was securely established.

John Naylor enjoyed a full and active retirement; he leaves his wife, Marion and his family. To them the academy offers its sincere and heartfelt condolences.
