Sports Awards Dinner

Glittering Awards celebration for St Margaret’s pupils

Our Sports stars gathered for a night of celebration at the school’s annual sports awards dinner.

Pupils were joined by staff and parents last weekend (2 July) at the Marriot Hotel in Liverpool city centre to celebrate another year of outstanding sporting success.

Hosted by our director of pastoral care, Mr Lawton, the evening recognised outstanding individual achievements and numerous league honours.

This year, SMA’s First XI football team were crowned League title winners in the Merseyside College’s NDS Trophies Championship for the second consecutive year, while the year 10 rugby team were named Lancashire Cup champions and both year 8 and 9 basketball teams lifted the Liverpool Development League titles.

Highlights of the evening included special video messages from sports pundits at BT Sport and Sky Sports, as well as an inspirational Q&A with former pupil, Simon Murphy, who now works as first team physio for Leicester City FC.

Special recognition was given to teacher Rob Kingston, who is celebrating three decades of service to the school, as he was presented with a commemorative album to a standing ovation.

Inline skating champion Jenna Downing also delivered an inspirational talk on the evening about her journey to overcome a diagnoses of MS and become world champion in her sport.

Mr Brierley, Principal said: “We are incredibly proud of the talent and commitment to sport within our school. Sport plays a vital role in encouraging key skills such as team-work, hard work and dedication, but above all it has become a tool to build relationships across the school and the ceremony was the perfect opportunity to celebrate the special community which we have built here.

“I hope that students were inspired by the number of special guests we had on the night and their inspirational stories, especially Jenna’s incredible journey, and can share in this passion to strive to make their own aspirations a reality.”
